Print Rumblings North of the Border

The word is out north of the border, and printmakers in the United States are gearing up for the Ambos Lados International Print Exchange also:

Skuishi (Susan Gonzalez) started the momentum by giving a printmaking demo in El Paso in April,
during an exhibit of the previous Horned Toad Print Exchange II, which she set up at Cafe de Tolteca in El Paso last April.

Francisco Delgado already has the print bug:

Henry Morales raises a print brayer to the project, from Albuquerque, New Mexico:

Pavel Acevedo may help bring in more California printmakers.  He made the below flyer for the Desert Triangle Print Carpeta exhibition, opening on June 7th (which he contributed to):

from Riverside, California;

Plus we have had a positive response from Santa Fe, New Mexico:

This print exchange got Connor Furr's attention at The Drawing Studio in Tucson, where he is teaching printmaking.

Birth of this International Print Exchange

The Ambos Lados International Print Exchange was conceived in Oaxaca, during an opening at Espacio Centro in October 2017, of the previous Horned Toad Print Exchange II.

Print Junta between El Paso and Oaxaca

During that opening at Espacio Centro (run by Nidia Rosales) -- Manuel Guerra (of Horned Toad Prints of El Paso), and Betatriz Rivas and Adrian Aguirre (of Taller Grafica Libre of Zaachila, Oaxaca) --  talked about continuing the print dialog across the US/Mexican border.  Ultimately they decided to sponsor a bigger print exchange -- this Ambos Lados International Print Exchange -- to continue the print momentum, and explore the diversity of approaches and styles between the two cultures.

PREVIOUS PRINT EXCHANGES

Many previous print exchanges, as well as other print projects, lead up to this Ambos Lados Print Exchange:

Horned Toad Print Exchange I

The first Horned Toad Print Exchange emerged in 2014, and inspired the YayBig Print Exchange out of Tucson.  Both print exchanges were self-published together in a catalog (view online at ISSUU).

Both print exchanges were also framed and exhibited together in several venues, starting with the Chalk the Block festival in 2014 in El Paso.

Horned Toad and YayBig print exchanges,

The momentum of all these print exchanges lead to various spin-offs -- including the Desert Triangle Print Carpeta -- a portfolio of 30 large prints that continues to show around the United States.

Horned Toad Print Exchange II

The second Horned Toad Print Exchange emerged in 2017, with a catalog, exhibitions, and continues to be exhibited as we announce the call for the Ambos Lados print exchange:

In addition to exhibiting in Oaxaca in 2017, the second Horned Toad Print Exchange also exhibited in Monterrey, Mexico.

We owe a debt to an even older international print exchange -- the Dialogos E Interpretaciones 2013  --  organized Jules Floss of North Carolina, and Jorge Rodriguez Osorio of Colombia.  This print exchange inspired the first Horned Toad Print Exchange, after which everything followed through like falling dominoes.

ANNOUNCEMENT
March/April 2018

The Ambos Lados International Print Exchange was announced by Manuel Guerra at the talk at the Rubin Center, on the UTEP campus in El Paso, on March 29th, 2018.

In Mexico, the Ambos Lados International Print Exchange was announced at the Taller la Catrina, Angelica Bracho's studio, during the opening in Monterrey, on April 12, 2018.

There is a lot of print momentum leading up to Ambos Lados, and yet we do not know how this print exchange will unfold.  We expect to have fun, and will put our best efforts into it, and hope to be pleasantly surprised, as we have been with the print exchanges of the past.
