Albuquerque Stirrings (and Cuba)

Ambos Lados printmakers are busy in Albuquerque, New Mexico (where your blogger lives).

Henry Morales set up his press at the mall, Jessica Weybright had a print opening at Remarque Print Workshop, Julianna Kirwin gave a print workshop in Mountainair, New Mexico -- and we found a Cuban printmaker visiting Santa Fe, Dairen Fernandez  (though he is not one of the Cuban printmakers in Ambos Lados).

HENRY MORALES
AT CORONADO MALL

Henry Morales set his press up at Coronado Mall, in the shop "Something Different," and does live printing there, as well as sells his woodblock prints.

CUBA
DAIREN FERNANDEZ

We bought a print from Dairen Fernandez of Cuba, as he was in Santa Fe for the Clandestina event (Cuba's first independent fashion label) at the International Folk Art Market

We bought this print from Dairen Fernandez of Havana

Dairen Fernandez is not in Ambos Lados, but he did participate with Octavio Irving (who is in Ambos Lados), and 3 other Cubans, in the LA Havana portfolio.  The Cuban artists made their prints at Self Help Graphics in LA, and the US artists made their prints in the Taller Experimental de Grafica in Havana.  Stuart Ashman (current director of IFAM in Santa Fe) was instrumental in putting together this portfolio.

SUMMARY -- Southwest Print Fiesta 2019

We had a great Ambos Lados opening in Silver City on Friday, October 11th, 2019, kicking off the 4th Annual Southwest Print Fiesta.  We were one of three exhibitions at the Light Art Space.

Valpuri Remling, master printer at Tamarind Institute, was the guest visiting artist this year at the Southwest Print Fiesta.

At the Light Art Space
with 2 other print exhibitions

The Ambos Lados International Print Exchange was one of 3 openings at the Light Art Space at the beginning of the Southwest Print Fiesta.  The attendance was good throughout the whole opening, from 5 - 8 PM. The other exhibitions were:

VENDOR MARKET

The main event was the vendor market on Saturday, October 12, 2019.  We met a lot of new printmakers, and said hello to other printmakers that we knew.

We bought 24 prints from the vendors, which we hope to show elsewhere, such as adjacent to the Desert Triangle exhibition in Las Cruces, coming November 1st.

Steamroller printing is a staple at all the Southwest Print Fiestas, and this one was as good as ever.

This year the Southwest Print Fiesta sponsored a print exchange, and 17 printmakers participated.

URUAPAN INTERVIEW
in Mexico

During the Southwest Print Fiesta, we had a live radio interview about the Ambos Lados International Print Exchange -- on Radio Uandarhi (Radio Cultural Communitaria) -- in Uruapan, Michoacan-- on Saturday, October 12, 2019, at 8:00 PM Uruapan time.  Samuel Diaz Gaona and Irma Reyes Almanza were in Uruapan, talking to Manuel Guerra and Karl Whitaker by smartphone.  The interview seemed to go just over a half hour. One can find Radio Uandarhi on Radio Garden.

Urupan submitted 14 print editions to the Ambos Lados International Print Exchange.

DESERT TRIANGLE PRINT CARPETA

One of our previous print projects -- the Desert Triangle Print Carpeta -- will be shown at the Las Cruces Museum of Art, opening on November 1st, 2019.  Many of the 30 artists in this portfolio also participated in Ambos Lados.  We aspire to show the prints we bought at this Southwest Print Fiesta in an adjacent venue, even if only as a one night pop-up, in order to link the current print activity in Southern New Mexico, namely Silver City and Las Cruces.

Ambos Lados Opening in Silver City, New Mexico

Ambos Lados had a great opening in Silver City, New Mexico, on Friday, October 11th, 2019.  This opening started the 4th Annual Southwest Print Fiesta.  It was at the Light Art Space, which also housed two other print exhibitions at the opening -- "Obsessions: Juried Exhibition of Hand Pulled Prints," and "Pull: 5 Female Printamakers" from Arizona.
