AMBOS LADOS INTERNATIONAL PRINT EXCHANGE

The Ambos Lados International Print Exchange expands the dialog between the two cultures, as there are strong printmaking communities in both the US and Mexico, but the printmakers are not familiar with each other.

Reception: 7 March, 1–4:30pm

"Ambos Lados" means both sides. This print exchange was organized from both sides of the border -- by Manuel Guerra of Horned Toad Prints in El Paso, and byAdrian Aguirre and Beatriz Rivas of  Taller Grafica Libre in Zaachila, Oaxaca. The 158 prints are fairly evenly split between the two countries -- with 72 from Mexico, 80 from the United States, and 6 from other countries, Australia, Canada, Cuba and Ireland.

Oaxaca is a kind of a Mecca for printmaking right now, with a lot of young talent emerging from that art center. We feel very privileged to be working with the artists down there, and with those from  other Mexican cities that participated as well. Most of the Mexican printmakers work in groups from  "talleres," or studios -- such as "Taller Grafica Libre," "Taller Grafica Ojos Tres," and "Espacio  Artistico Xicotencalt" of Oaxaca; "Taller La Catrina" of Monterrey; "3 Gatos Press" of Guanajuato;  "Taller Escuela MAPECO" of Uruapan; "Taller de Grafica El Ajolote" of Mexico City; and "Museo Taller Erasto Cortés" in Puebla, to mention a few.

Texas also has a strong young printmaking community. There has been a welling up of printmaking activity in El Paso recently. For instance, this is the 3rd print exchange organized by Horned Toad Prints; and half of the printmakers from the Desert Triangle Print Carpeta (2016) come from the El Paso area. There is a strong showing of San Antonio printmakers in this Ambos Lados exchange, centered around UTSA.

New Mexico is also well represented by 18 printmakers, working from studios such as the Santa Fe Etching Club, and Remarque Print Workshop in Albuquerque. Likewise we have solid participation from the rest of the border states, with 9 participants from Arizona, and 8 from California.

Plus we are very pleased with the printmakers from other parts of the country who submitted as well. Four Seattle artists submitted, including Brain Lane of Print Zero Studios.

Anyone in the world could participate, this was a non-juried prnt exchange, and the theme was open.

We asked for 12 prints, on 8 x 8 inch paper.
