Summary -- Taos Center for the Arts exhibition

Borders have never stopped art - as a matter of fact, the walls at the border are where art is showing up.”

— DAVID FARMER, CO-COORDINATOR "AMBOS LADOS" EXHIBIT, TAOS (quoted from the Tempo article)

"Las fronteras nunca han detenido el arte; de hecho, los muros en la frontera son donde el arte está apareciendo."

We had a great exhibition at the Taos Center for the Arts, in Taos, New Mexico (January 10 - February 9, 2020).

The Taos News newspaper gave us a red banner, and put the Ambos Lados exhibition on the cover for the Tempo magazine.  Manuel Guerra and Karl Whitaker gave a talk on January 18th, following a talk by David Farmer. The opening was on Thursday, January 23, 2020.

PRINT DEMO

The last event was a Print Demo on Saturday, February 8th, 2020 -- with demos by Bob Parker, Gene Stewart, Sarah Hart and Gary Cook.

TAOS SPONSORS

The Taos Center for the Arts (TCA) and UNM Taos sponsored the exhibit.

Specifically: Colette La Bouff, the executive director of the TCA, David Farmer, Bob Parker, and Gary Cook, print professor at UNM Taos.  The additional prints from Oaxaca were from the collection of David and Carol Farmer, and Frank and Joy Purcell.

UNM TAOS

UNM Taos was one of the sponsors of the Ambos Lados exhibition.  They have a beautiful new campus south of the city, with an impressive printmaking department.

OAXACA CARPETA

We were very much inspired by the Oaxaca Carpeta (Oaxaca Collective: Carpeta de Grafica Nacional) early on, and lent that to Taos for the printmakers to appreciate.  Three artists in the Oaxaca Carpeta are in Ambos Lados:  Pavel Acevedo, Roberto Rodriguez, and Carlos Flores Rom.  Two artists in the Oaxaca Carpeta are in selection of Oaxaca prints from the Taos collectors:  Mario Guzman and Alberto Cruz.

OTHER OAXACA EVENTS

We have been developing a relation with Oaxaca printmakers since 2014.  Below is some of that history, and other Oaxaca presence in New Mexico and El Paso.

We gave an Ambos Lados presentation at the IAGO (Institute of Graphic Arts from Oaxaca) last August, 2019.

The panel consisted of Nidia Rosales, Karl WhitakerManuel Guerra

EXHIBITION AT THE RUBIN CENTER IN EL PASO,
UTEP CAMPUS 2018

EL PASO MUSEUM OF ART
CONTEMPORARY MEXICAN PRINTS 2017

Then we added more Mexican prints to that collection, and showed them in a pop-up at the El Paso Museum of Art, during the Chalk the Block festival in 2017 -- Contemporary Mexican Prints.

DESERT TRIANGLE POP-UP
OAXACA 2015

We showed another print project -- the Desert Triangle Print Carpeta --in a pop-up exhibition in Oaxaca, 2015.

HORNED TOAD II PRINT EXCHANGE
OAXACA 2017

Later we showed the Horned Toad II Print Exchange in Oaxaca in 2017.  This is the print exchange that preceded Ambos Lados, and included a few artists from Oaxaca.

IT STARTED IN 2014

Our Oaxaca addiction started in 2014, when Tanya Rich and Karl Whitaker visited in December 2014.  We were guided by a great post about Oaxaca printmaking by Kevin McKloskey, of Kutztown University in Pennsylvania.

GETTING UP PA'L PUEBLO
NATIONAL HISPANIC CULTURAL CENTER

Right before we visited Oaxaca, Karl saw a Oaxaca print show at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque in 2014 -- Getting Up Pa'l Pueblo.  This exhibit was organized by Dr Suzanne Schadl of UNM, and Mike Graham de la Rosa of the National Hispanic Cultural Center.  Many of added prints in the Taos exhibition were by the same ASARO printamakers.

UNM has an online achive of prints by the ASARO printmakers.

***

Oaxaca now is the Mecca of printmaking, with so many young active printmakers, creating and selling their prints in the center of the city.

The current print impetus started in 2006, during the Teacher's Strike.  However the famous Mexican artist Francisco Toledo, a native of the state of Oaxaca, has been supporting printmaking since before then; and Shinzaburo Takeda has been teaching Oaxaca printmakers since 1978.  Moreover, the Taller de Artes Plasticas Rufino Tamayo started in 1974, with an emphasis on printmaking.

We also note that Taos has a printmaking tradition:

Bob Parker co-organized with David Farmer, a previous print exhibition in Taos called "Pressing Through Time: 150 Years of Printmaking in Taos" in 2015 at the Harwood Museum (another link about the exhibition).  Some of the original website for "Pressing Through Time" is archived at the Internet Wayback Machine.

Sarah Hart, who runs the Hart Print Shop,  told us about a previous Taos exhibition of young printmakers in 2014 called "Pressing On," and organized by Tim Jag.

We would like to thank several people who made the Taos exhibition possible -- Colette La Bouff, the executive director of the TCA, David Farmer, Carol Farmer, Bob Parker, Deborah McLean, Frank Purcell, Joy Purcell, Jane Farmer, Andy Johnson, Kandace Nachtrab, Chris Riveles, Chelsea Reidy and Kate.

We also want to thank Eric Thomson of the Argos Studio/Gallery in Santa Fe, for framing all the prints, and also for his guidance.  We would never have had this exhibition in Taos if it had not been for Eric Thomson.

Thank you Taos!
