UNM Taos and Taos Center for the Arts present Ambos Lados International Print ExchangeDecember, 2019 - (Taos, NM) - UNM Taos and Taos Center for the Arts will co-present an Ambos Lados, an international print exchange. The exhibition, which will run January 13 through February 9, 2020, is circulated to the TCA by Karl Whitaker and Manuel Guerra. The TCA Curatorial Committee will add to the Ambos Lados exhibition several prints from recent travels to Oaxaca by Taos collectors. There will be an opening reception held in the Encore Gallery on Thursday, January 23, from 4 to 6pm.
Ambos Lados is a print exchange organized from both sides of the border - by Manuel Guerra at Horned Toad Prints in El Paso, Texas, and by Adrian Aguirre and Beatriz Rivas of Taller Grafica Libra in Zaachila, Oaxaca. This show and the exchange, totaling 158 prints, expands the intercultural dialogue between the United States and Mexico, where there are two strong, independent but linked printmaking communities.
Two talks and a live printmaking demonstration have been planned in conjunction with the Ambos Lados exhibit.
On Saturday, January 18, David Farmer will speak on “Printing the Future: Graphic Arts in Oaxaca Today” in the Taos Community Auditorium 2 to 3pm. Directly following, Karl Whitaker and Manuel Guerra will give a talk entitled, “Prints Travel Easily, And Start Dialog (Our Experience in Mexico” in the Encore Gallery 3 to 4pm.
On Saturday, February 8, Gary Cook, Sarah Hart, Robert Parker, and Gene Stewart will provide live printmaking demonstrations in the Encore Gallery from 2 to 4pm.
All exhibition events are free and open to the public.
Karl Whitaker and Manuel Guerra exhibit organizers commented on the Taos show, “"Prints travel so easily through El Paso, they can melt the border."
Gary Cook, UNM Taos, says of the exhibit "You can feel the passion for life and the love of print making in the work of our friends from across the border. This show offers us a look at not just multiple printmaking techniques but at the political and personal expression of another culture, a culture that deeply values art."
Colette LaBouff, Executive Director of the Taos Center for the Arts, commented, “The TCA is excited about the Ambos Lados show for many reasons: the importance of this print exchange for printmakers working in Mexico and the U.S., the willingness of the curators to bring the show to Taos, the collaboration with UNM Taos to make it happen as well as the Taos printmakers and collectors who so generously are also bringing the show to life in the Encore Gallery for the community. It’s a fantastic collaborative effort.”

Will you be doing this again? I didn't hear in time to participate.
ReplyDeleteHi Becky, we don't know what we will be doing in the future. However somebody may take the initiative and do a print exchange again. Are you in Taos?
