AMBOS LADOS INTERNATIONAL PRINT EXCHANGE

The Ambos Lados International Print Exchange expands the dialog between the two cultures, as there are strong printmaking communities in both the US and Mexico, but the printmakers are not familiar with each other.

Reception: 7 March, 1–4:30pm

"Ambos Lados" means both sides. This print exchange was organized from both sides of the border -- by Manuel Guerra of Horned Toad Prints in El Paso, and byAdrian Aguirre and Beatriz Rivas of  Taller Grafica Libre in Zaachila, Oaxaca. The 158 prints are fairly evenly split between the two countries -- with 72 from Mexico, 80 from the United States, and 6 from other countries, Australia, Canada, Cuba and Ireland.

Oaxaca is a kind of a Mecca for printmaking right now, with a lot of young talent emerging from that art center. We feel very privileged to be working with the artists down there, and with those from  other Mexican cities that participated as well. Most of the Mexican printmakers work in groups from  "talleres," or studios -- such as "Taller Grafica Libre," "Taller Grafica Ojos Tres," and "Espacio  Artistico Xicotencalt" of Oaxaca; "Taller La Catrina" of Monterrey; "3 Gatos Press" of Guanajuato;  "Taller Escuela MAPECO" of Uruapan; "Taller de Grafica El Ajolote" of Mexico City; and "Museo Taller Erasto Cortés" in Puebla, to mention a few.

Texas also has a strong young printmaking community. There has been a welling up of printmaking activity in El Paso recently. For instance, this is the 3rd print exchange organized by Horned Toad Prints; and half of the printmakers from the Desert Triangle Print Carpeta (2016) come from the El Paso area. There is a strong showing of San Antonio printmakers in this Ambos Lados exchange, centered around UTSA.

New Mexico is also well represented by 18 printmakers, working from studios such as the Santa Fe Etching Club, and Remarque Print Workshop in Albuquerque. Likewise we have solid participation from the rest of the border states, with 9 participants from Arizona, and 8 from California.

Plus we are very pleased with the printmakers from other parts of the country who submitted as well. Four Seattle artists submitted, including Brain Lane of Print Zero Studios.

Anyone in the world could participate, this was a non-juried prnt exchange, and the theme was open.

We asked for 12 prints, on 8 x 8 inch paper.

Mexican and Oaxacan Prints in Santa Fe

There is currently some excitement in Santa Fe, New Mexico, about Oaxacan, and Mexican, prints.  Frank Rose of the upcoming "Hecho A Mano" gallery (opening on Canyon Road, March 29th), is showing prints by a Oaxaca artist at the new Ikonic Coffee, and also historical Taller de Grafica Popular prints at the gallery in THE Magazine of Santa Fe's space.

At the new Ikonic Coffee location, at 314 S Guadalupe Street, there is a print show by the Oaxacan printmaker Daniel Hernandez.  February 8 - March 31st, 2019. This is put on by "Hecho A Mano," the soon to be gallery on Canyon Road, run by Frank Rose.

The Santa Fe Reporter has an article about the show.

TALLER DE GRAFICA POPULAR

THE Magazine of Santa Fe also hung Frank Rose's Mexican print collection in their gallery space.  These prints were largely by the Taller de Grafica Popular, of the 20th century.  The exhibition was called "Victoria!  Selected Political Prints From Mexico (1910 - 1960)."

On Friday, February 15, 2019, there was a talk about these TGP (Taller de Grafica Popular) prints in the gallery of the offices of THE Magazine.  Josie Lopez, the new curator at the Albuquerque Museum, gave the talk, from 6 -7 PM.

Dr Josie Lopez talking about the TGP prints hanging at THE Magazine

Dr Joise Lopez had an interesting comment. She mentioned that there was a falling out amongst the artists of the Taller de Grafica Popular about selling their prints.  Some printmakers did not want to charge for their prints, and left the organization.  The current situation here is completely different, as it is often hard to get motivated to make prints unless there is some financial compensation, if only to break even.

Flashback -- El Paso

Last fall there was a Oaxaca exhibition at the Rubin Center, on the UTEP campus, organized by Kerry Doyle. It was called "Iconografika Oaxaca."

It's good to see the Oaxaca artists getting some attention north of the border, since the up and coming young artists are really good.

Summary -- Spotlights on our Printmakers

There are a lot of interesting artists and associations amongst the Ambos Lados printmakers.  Glenn Buack of Tucson talks about his prints in an interesting video.  "3 Gatos Press" of Leon, Guanajuato made their prints on a tortilla press. Many of our participants are in other international print exchanges, or other print portfolios.  Plus we are very proud that we have two artists from Cuba that submitted print editions.

MONTERREY
Taller La Catrina

Angelica Bracho runs Taller La Catrina in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico.  Last year, when she showed the Horned Toad II Print Exchange, she helped decide on the title "Ambos Lados," and thus launched this print exchange on full speed.

HORNED TOAD II PRINT EXCHANGE
Overlap with AMBOS LADOS

The previous print exchange -- Horned Toad II Print Exchange -- included 6 printmakers from Oaxaca, 44 of whom are in Ambos Lados -- Adrian Aguirre, Jorge MendozaBeatriz Rivas, Andrea Velasquez.  After showing the Horned Toad II in Oaxaca in 2017, it was obvious that there had to be a print follow-up of some sort.

Also many US printmakers in the Horned Toad II print exchange are in Ambos Lados -- Pavel Acevedo, Christin ApodacaAaron Bass, Laurie D Brown, Glenn Buack, Ashley B Cranney, Diane Davis, Francisco Delgado, Jules Floss, Sam Garcia, Susan Gonzalez (Skuiski), Manuel Guerra, Eric Hodgins, Brian Lane, Eli Levin, Abby Mattison, Raul Monarrez, Henry Morales, Lyn Nicholls, Augustine Romero, Humberto Saenz, Marco Sanchez, Alan Serna, Diane Vera, Jim Weaver, and Karl Whitaker.

TLACOLULOKOS
Oaxaca

Los Tlacolulokos of Matamoros, Oaxaca, painted beautiful murals in the downtown Los Angeles public library, but are not allowed to return to the US to see them.

HENRY MORALES PRINT DEMOS
Albuquerque

Henry Morales does a lot of wood block print demos in Albuquerque, often taking his press on site.  He most recently did the print demo during the opening of New Mexico: Living Relief exhibition at Remarque Print Workshop. He usually brings his press for the Marigold Parade, Albuquerque's Day of the Dead parade in the South Valley.

PUEBLA

We met a lot of great printmakers during the Desert Triangle exhibition in Puebla in 2017.  Therefore we invited the Puebla printmakers to submit to Ambos Lados, and their work is absolutely outstanding!  Thank you Puebla!

*

TALLER GRAFICA LIBRE
Oaxaca

Taller Grafica Libre in Zachilla, just outside the city of Oaxaca, is the studio of Adrian Aguirre and Beatriz Rivas.  They organized most of the Mexican artists that submitted to Ambos Lados, and created a lot of those print editions in their studio.

HORNED TOAD PRINTS
El Paso

Horned Toad Prints is Manuel Guerra's studio on Alameda Street in El Paso, so close to the border that you can walk into Mexico in 30 minutes.  With the help of printmakers extraordinaire -- Raul Monarrez and Francisco Delgado -- Manny churns out the prints and directs the US half of the Ambos Lados International Print Exchange.

Pulqueria
Jalapa

Perhaps the best print venue ever -- a pulqueria!  The show below is by the printmaker Zamer, in "La Otra" pulqueria in Jalapa, Veracruz.  While this pulqueria show has nothing to do with Ambos Lados, the whole environment and presentation is worth mentioning.
